Power Ideas Rekindled - I Resolve...

Well, it's that time of year.  Another year has come and gone and here we are in the tenth year of the new millennium!

I suppose most of you are in the process of making those New Year's resolutions that are ever so popular for the next few weeks.  You know...lose a little weight, try not to work so many hours, don't lose my temper, ya da, ya da, ya da!

Why is it that New Year's resolutions are ill-fated to fail, right from the get-go?  The reason, of course, is that there is no strong foundation to help you to succeed in accomplishing whatever it is that you have resolved to accomplish.

Think of it as building a house.  What comes first?  The foundation, of course.

With regard to goals that you have set as resolutions, this means having a clearly defined, SPECIFIC goal.

Next comes the ability to MEASURE the goal.  Measurement takes on many forms.  Sometimes it is useful to measure what is going on currently, which is causing you to set this particular goal.  While the goal is progressing, measurement is helpful in order to determine if you are on track with all of the actions that you have identified for completion.  Once the goal is accomplished, measurement is still valuable to confirm that your new goal is working as intended.

The third step is to determine the specific ACTIONS that make up your goal and that will cause the goal to be manageable as you are trying to complete it.

Next, you must determine if your goal is REALISTIC.  Do you believe that the goal is achievable and that it will have value to you when it is accomplished?

Finally, all goals must be TIME-STATED to provide a target to aim for.  When is this goal to be accomplished in order for it to be of value to you?

You absolutely must have great resolve if you want to accomplish those things that you identified as goals-worthy of your time and attention.

At Houston Partners International, we are experts in helping you to achieve your goals.  Let us know if we can help you to make your resolutions come true in 2010.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Jerry Houston
